MBA Major Family Business

MBA Major Family Business - Program Description

The Uniqueness of Family Businesses.

Family Business has played a critical role in the development of nations and societies. The origins of most large corporations come from the inception of wealth creation within families from generation to generation.

They constitute the whole gamut of enterprises in which an entrepreneur or next-generation CEO and one or more family members influence the firm via their participation, their ownership control, their strategic preferences, and the culture and values they impart to the enterprise.

Most businesses in operation in the world, especially in emerging economies are family business. However, the possibilities of a family business to succeed from generation to generation are reduced as the time goes on. Research studies have shown that trans-generation success decrease from the first to second generation 50%, and from the second to the third just 1 of every 4 family firms do survive.

  • Some of the key differences between nonfamily corporations and family businesses are:
  • Goals do differ. Legacy and other non-economic goals tend to be a top priority for family businesses.
  • Some of these goals tend to diverge over time from different family business stakeholders, especially when such stakeholders belong to different generations.
  • Family businesses tend to have a long-term orientation, culture, resilience, knowledge and flexibility that will lead to develop natural advantages over nonfamily firms.
  • Limited access to capital markets, the danger of nepotism, paternalistic practices carried to the extreme, and psychological issues among family members can nullify those advantages.
  • The changes of the roles of women, children, and relationships among family members do have significant implications of the process of new venture creation and performance.
  • The intentions and visions of a dominant family coalition and the potential of that same vision to survive across generations are the most fundamental dimensions that distinguish a family business from a nonfamily business.
