Program Description
The Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology has been put in place for students looking to gain employment as professionals in the ever-growing IT industry. Individuals who graduate from Atlantis University’s program will have acquired foundational knowledge and practical skills in programming, database management, information systems, telecommunications, and electronics.  

The Information Technology curriculum at AU includes a balanced combination of both theoretical and skill-building courses. The program has also been explicitly designed so that graduates will have acquired the education needed  to go out and get the global, industry certifications that employers look for when hiring new professionals.

 

Much like many of the other degrees available at Atlantis, classes can either be taken online, or at our Miami, Florida campus, where the university’s computer lab is made available for students to work on assignments and gain valuable hands-on experience.  Additionally, graduates of the Associate’s program find themselves inspired to continue on with their formal education, they can have all of the credits that they earned apply towards the requirements for a Bachelor’s of Science degree at Atlantis.

Computer Information Technology Program Objective
The following important objectives have been built into the Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology offered at Atlantis University:  





  • Develop students’ abilities to administer, manage, and troubleshoot hardware, software, and services for single, mixed, and multi-user environments.
  • Train students in matters pertaining to data protection.  Specific topics include designing and inspecting security measures, and implementing rules of conduct to ensure that personnel treat sensitive data accordingly.
  • Educate students in the theories and practices of network management.

  • Prepare students for a variety of IT positions and roles: technical support specialists, help-desk technicians, systems administrators, computer security professionals, etc.
  • Develop students’ abilities to communicate effectively,  think critically, and make strategic decisions.
Career Coursework
Program courses at Atlantis University can either be taken at our Miami, Florida campus, or online. Students working towards an Associate' s degree in Computer Information Technology should expect to enroll in at least some of the following career-enhancing classes:
  • Programming - Students are introduced to packaged software, statistical packages, spreadsheets, and the principles of programming in a high-level language. Structured programming, problem-solving techniques, arrays, procedures, parameters, recursion, and the design and implementation of algorithms are also covered.
  • Information Systems I&II - This pair of courses explores the specification, design, and implementation of information systems typically utilized by organizations as decision-making tools.
  • Microcomputer Operating Systems - Students are introduced to some of the fundamental ways in which businesses make use of the microcomputer.  Spreadsheets, database management, word-processing, and decision-making models are all examined. 
  • Administrative Computer Systems - This course provides an introduction to databases.  Data storage, manipulation, evaluation, display, and related issues are covered
  • Database Management Systems - Students explore the ways in which computers and specific types of software can be utilized as learning tools.  Specific topics include databases, spreadsheets, semantic networks, expert systems, hypermedia construction, modeling tools, and computer conferencing.
  • Telecommunications I - This course offers an introduction to the basic concepts of computer and communication networks.  Numerous topics are reviewed, including  telecommunications transmission media, transmission characteristics, error characteristics, detection and  correction, local and wide area networking applications, hardware, software, network security, and data recovery.
