Program Description
Economics and Finance are recognized as two of the most dynamic and expansive areas in today's business world.  Undergraduate students who enroll in Atlantis University’s specialization in Business Economics learn from faculty who bring real-world financial experience to the classroom. Through experiential training methods, you will gain the qualifications needed to work with the new and diverse financial products and services of the global economy. 

The Business Economics concentration presents the principles and theories that drive economic behavior and the decisions that industry professionals make in the business world. Students learn how individual industries operate and the ways in which they relate to the function of the market economy as a whole.  Additionally, the program explores how changes in technology, government regulation, and market circumstances have a bearing on people’s lives, the organizations of which they are a part, and society overall.

 

AU Students who earn a Bachelor's in Business Administration with a specialization in Economics, typically find employment in fields such as bank management, credit management, insurance analysis, financial planning, etc.

  • Students are taught to analyze the external and internal influences on business institutions and practices.
  • Train students to identify the structures in business organizations that can be managed for productivity.
  • Ensure that students are able to distinguish the proper roles and responsibilities of executives and subordinates working in business, industry, and non-profit organizations.
  • Encourage students to use technology and other resources to remain current in the business fields of their choice.
  • Exercise the analytical and critical thinking processes of students so that they can make effective business decisions.
  • Train students to identify, analyze, and manage the sorts of legal and ethical issues that often arise in business environments.
  • Demonstrate effective written communication skills in a business environment.
  • Make sure that students who earn their diploma can  if they so desire enter MBA or other graduate-level programs in business without further academic preparation.
Career Coursework

Program courses at Atlantis University can either be taken at our Miami, Florida campus, or online. Students working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics should expect to enroll in at least some of the following career-enhancing classes:





  • Investment Fundamentals and Security Analysis - Students are introduced to security analysis and valuation.  Focusing on how investment decisions are made, the course explores the nature of securities, mechanics and trading costs, the ways in which securities markets operate, the relationship between risk and return, equity securities, fixed income securities, portfolio diversification, and concepts of valuation.
  • Money and Banking - This course examines the global financial system, exploring the role of financial services companies in money and capital markets. Topics include the nature of money and credit, U.S. banking systems, central bank policies and controls, acquisition of funds, investments, and credit extension.
  • Financial Statement Analysis - Students will become familiar with the techniques used to analyze and interpret financial statements, and how those statements are used to measure a firm's overall financial strength, income potential, working capital requirements, and debt-paying ability.
  • Fixed Income Securities and Credit Analysis - Offering a broad survey, this course reviews the characteristics of debt securities, provisions for paying off bonds, debt market structure, bond investment risk, global bond sectors and instruments, yield spreads and measures, valuation, spot and forward rates, interest rate risk, term structure and volatility of interest rates, bonds with embedded options, mortgage-backed securities, asset-backed securities, trading strategies, and credit analysis.
  • International Financial Management - The evolution of the international monetary system is covered and students learn about specific issues facing international business firms and banks.  Specific topics include balance of payments, the function of foreign exchange markets, foreign exchange rate determination, operation of foreign currency, global capital markets, and the use of international debt and equity markets to optimize the financial structure of firms.
